Funny People comes out on DVD this week - all about the hillarious, weird and sometimes dark world of stand up comedy.
We’ve often mused on what it’s like to do the ‘hardest job in the world’ so, for a laugh (absolutely no pun intended) Ant Nichols and I accepted a challenge to write and perform 5 mins of comedy.
We had a little help in our venture: the utterly splendid Micky Flanagan offered himself as a mentor and our sweaty hands were expertly held by compere Rufus Hound. Both were unbelieveably nice to us and sternly warned the audience into keeping their heckles to a minimum.
Nothing, however, could have prepared me for the gut-wrenching fear of facing press, PR and a paying audience. Especially as a large section of that audience consisted of Witherspoon’s pub staff, out on a belated christmas do - just what you want for your first time!
The venue was Tattershall comedy club in London - technically a large boat moored opposite the London Eye. The swaying motion of the water only added to the feeling of total unreality, causing me to question ‘just how drunk was I really?’
After an ill-advised number of beers, I staggered out in front of the blinding lights and babbled like a loon.
